3/9/2006 - Scholarship and Internship awarded in honor of a Japanese-American Sea-Based Missile Defense Partner
|
HONOLULU, HI (March 9, 2006) The Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance (MDAA) presented a $1,000 scholarship and internship to the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Honolulu on Friday, March 3, 2006. This scholarship will benefit an American student of Japanese descent from Hawaii or attending college in Hawaii for the 2006-2007 school year. “I am very honored to accept this gift on behalf of the Japanese-American community,” said Gregg Mueller, Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Honolulu. “It is wonderful to see organizations honor the strong partnership between Japan and America and was most interesting to learn more about how the partnership is strengthening both nations’ security.”
As a precursor to the first missile intercept test of the Japanese-American Partnership for Sea-based Missile Defense, over 50 leaders from Hawaii and the mainland came together for dinner and a presentation to mark the advancements towards a more secure Japan and America. “The Japanese-American partnership is a great international example of two nations committed to the public safety and economic well-being of their nations,” said Riki Ellison, President and founder of MDAA. “We, at MDAA, encourage the continued development and exciting prospects derived from this cooperative partnership in missile defense.” The recent successful sea-based missile defense test with a US missile and a Japanese nosecone, launched from a US AEGIS ship, is the first of many missile ventures between Japan and the United States.
To further strengthen the next generation of missile defense advocates, MDAA will host an area student for a 3-month internship in Washington D.C., supporting missile defense education and advocacy, in addition granting the $1000 scholarship. Candidates may download an application from the MDAA website (www.missiledefenseadvocacy.org) beginning April 15, 2006 and have until June 15, 2006 to submit their completed applications. The scholarship and internship will be awarded in the 2006-2007 academic year to an undergraduate or graduate student of Japanese descent from or studying in Hawaii in the programs of international relations, political science, or a defense science. The recipient will be selected by an interdisciplinary panel representing leaders from Washington D.C., Hawaii, and the Japanese community.
