Ellison and MDAA have been doing a national poll on our nation's missile defense program since 2004, and the data continues to show support for the missile defense program in all sectors of the nation and by all the major political parties. The following comments by Ellison explain the findings of the poll:
"This morning here at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. , the American Public spoke on Missile Defense and showed their close to unanimity support for Missile Defense as near to 9 out of 10 Americans want Missile Defense from all regions and all political parties. It is without question a Mandate, and time for 'Change we Need' in President Obama's own words.
"The American Public supports the President Obama statements and position for Missile Defense at 84% and his public support for the European Missile Defense site in Poland and the Czech Republic at 78%. Moreover the American Public demands through majority at 60% that the homeland of the United States is the first priority of Missile Defense Funding and that protecting deployed armed forces is second at 33%.
"The American Public further states on a majority they are opposed to the $1.2 billion dollar cut on missile defense proposed by Secretary Gates and President Obama's Administration. 8 out of 10 Americans think research and development of new missile defense systems is extremely important and only 15% oppose any missile defense systems located in space. The American public clearly recognize the threat from Iran, North Korea and surprisingly Pakistan to the United States National Security.
"These Public Survey results from a world-renown research firm that does the current CNN Polling based out of Princeton New Jersey that has been doing polling of the American Public since 1938 stand as they should as representation of the American Public. The American public has a voice on Missile Defense and the United States Congress who represents the American Public must take into serious consideration their voice."
"As our President Barack Obama states 'It's about Time. It's about Change;' and 'Change can't happen without you.'
"The President is right, and the American Public are right."
